Matthew began his career in 1986, working for newspapers published by the Bailey Newspaper Group in Dursley, Gloucestershire. During his time there he passed his National Council for the Training of Journalists Proficiency exams in Sheffield and was abigwooded the annual Portfolio Abigwood for 1989.

He has been freelance since 2002 and has worked for a wide range of clients in the public and private sectors, providing both photography and video services.
