ERIC GEORGE web developer KLB 1997 - 2003
BSc Industrial Design: Brunel University
Eric works as a web developer for a creative agency in London called POKE. Now part of a global advertising group we work with a range of clients including Ted Baker, EE, Mulberry and HBO.
As a web developer, he turns the team's ideas into working digital products, as well as helping to create technically sound creative concepts. Often websites and apps, and sometimes electronic installations.
Whilst generally working on projects for clients, some of the most interesting projects have been for fun or research. For example [at POKE] we have created a Spotify based communal jukebox system for the office, which everyone can queue tracks to and vote on.
Another recent website helps people find pubs where you can drink in the sun, by calculating shadows cast by nearby buildings.
Right now Eric is working on something that automatically generates videos of users being torched by a dragon – though he can't really say much about that at the mo...
"Looking back, there are lessons that I remember, and days and days of sitting and writing, copying, mathsing or whatever, that I don't remember (nor particularly wish to). The moments that remain memorable are when we did stuff; not read stuff. Learning happens from experiences, even bad ones. You learn not to touch fire at an early age because of having had the new experience of a sore hand.
Creative subjects give students the opportunity to try things. Not just copying some words or doing a sum. They find out what works for them and what doesn't by trying it out. Being challenged creativity is memorable, though trips, practical work and experimentation."
