RICHARD MODLEN freelance setbuilder, modelmaker and 3D stopframe animation rigger KLB 1983 - 1990
After leaving Bornemouth College Of Art And Design I began working for my father. The work involved repairing and maintaining
20-80 ton diggers, not very creative but it taught me a strong work ethic and I picked up some new skills such as paint spraying on a large scale
and welding. During this time I restored a 1969 VW 'split screen' camper van in my spare time.
I then joined Barn Door Productions where I developed skills in model/prop making and set building for various commercials and productions.
Most of the team from Barn Door then went on to Red Collar Productions where we worked on 3d stop motion animation series for BBC
and ITV and between us had a wide range of skills which was vital for a small crew.
In around 2007 I joined Aardman Animations as their Shaun the Sheep offshoot 'Timmy Time' started production alongside Nick Park's
Wallace and Gromit in A Matter Of Loaf And Death film.
It was kind of a baptism of fire in that I was entering the world of Rigging, joining Aardman, and working on two productions
simultaneously, a steep learning curve but really interesting work.
Rigging is essentially problem solving, you get called to a unit where the animator is taking a brief from the director. You discuss the action in
the shot and anything in the shot that moves, flies, or cannot support itself needs a rig which is basically a fully adjustable construction carefully attached to the puppet or prop. The trick is giving the animator everything they need to create the action but also keeping the amount of rigging to a minimum as it all has to 'painted' out
frame by frame in post production. Depending on the shot the rigs can be massive scaffolding frameworks which have to span entire sets or tiny delicate rigs using aluminium wire, pins, fishing line, etc.
We have a massive stock of kit which can be used and adapted for most situations but invariably we have to make bespoke rigs for specific requirements and we have
a fully kitted out machine shop where we can make most things inhouse.
I have been at Aardman since 2007 and work has been fairly constant. Any breaks in production I have found work set building for live action productions
stills photography, and , most recently in 2013/14 a job for 'Cod Steaks' where I was part of a team building a theme park ride for Porto (Portugal) Which involved building
life size galleon ships, sea monsters, etc. for a Disney type ride through various 'zones' depicting different countries.
I'm currently working on Shaun The Sheep Series 5 till May 2015
