EVA ROWSON artist and curator KLB 1996 - 2003
I went directly from KLB to the University of Leeds in 2003 to do a BA in Fine Art, which was split equally between Art History and Fine Art. During my time in Leeds I collaborated with several self-organised art collectives to organise exhibitions and events in the city, including Black Dogs (www.black-dogs.org) whom I still continue to work with now.
I moved to London in 2008 and started working at the Tate, initially in fundraising and then moving on to work for the Deputy Director and finally to organising the opening events for exhibitions at Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Alongside working at Tate, I continued to develop an independent curatorial and artistic practice and in 2010 I co-started 38b (www.38bprojects.com), opening up the living room of my Peckham flat as an occasional exhibition space for artists and curators to test ideas and show new work. The exhibition programme is continuing, and we have so far hosted 15 exhibitions in the flat.
I left Tate after 5 years in August 2013 to return to studying, and joined the pilot year of Open School East (http://openschooleast.org), a study programme for young artists and curators in Hackney, London. During my time at Open School East, I began a collaborative research project called Wish you'd been here (http://wishyoudbeenhere.tumblr.com) with a fellow student Andrea Francke, to bring together histories and current thoughts of hospitality in art and curatorial practices.
After finishing the study year at OSE in summer 2014, I curated a programme of 21 performances in public spaces across London for the Art Licks Weekend (http://artlicksweekend.com/performance/). I started my current role in November 2014, working as the Project Coordinator for freethought, an academic and curatorial collective who are curating a strand of the Bergen Assembly in 2016 in Bergen, Norway.
