RACHEL SHERRATT architect
KLB 1993 - 2000

  • Studied at Cardiff University (BSC(Hons) Architecture & BArch Architecture)
  • Worked at Stride Treglown in Bristol initially, a large multi-disciplinary office, on commercial and healthcare schemes.
  • Then moved to Verity & Beverley in Tetbury, a firm founded over 140 years ago (originally based in London, early projects include the Criterion & Lords cricket pavilion), who specialise in Listed buildings and one-off high end private houses.
  • Took my professional qualifications at Bath University to become an RIBA Charted Architect. Now been at Verity & Beverley for 9 years, and am an Associate Director.
  • Recent projects I have designed include a contemporary new dwelling in Cheltenham which was shortlisted for ‘Sustainable Design of the Year’ by Designer Magazine, a sensitive refurbishment of a 400-year old Grade II* Listed property in Broadway, and a traditional new country house in Hampshire.

I have very fond memories of DT lessons at KLB and being encouraged to explore a creative path in life (something which my parents were not initially very keen on but are now very supportive of, especially as it means they get free architectural services!). From being involved in designing & constructing a mosaic dragon seat for the school playground following our trip to explore Gaudi in Barcelona, to the visits to London to see the Design Museum & the Oxo tower, it definitely made me realise that the art of designing something which then gets translated into reality was something I wanted to pursue as a career.
I think it is very important to encourage various different creative studies at school. Often students do not know enough about the great variety of creative courses/careers on offer so are not aware of whether it is something they will enjoy doing or not. I also think it is key to provide support and encouragement for those disciplines, like Architecture, that bridge the gap between creative learning and more traditional maths/science/English courses, to inspire students like myself who are looking for something wide-ranging and challenging.
